High Hopes

I had high hopes and big dreams for this classroom website!  Last school year I came up with the idea while working with a UH student in the classroom and thinking it would be a great new way to keep parents informed and share my resources and ideas with others.  The main purpose was and is to share what is happening in the classroom.  The blog has been neglected this school year.  Sorry!  :)

I am currently taking an online course called "Classroom Websites That Work" and hope that the information, resources, and tools that I use in the course will make managing this website easier.  There are never enough hours in the day for everything that I want to do for the students or my family!

My youngest nephew recently turned 4, so all gears at home are focused on how to help him be completely ready for kindergarten in another year.  He is definitely a little boy and would rather explore outside with the neighbor's kids or play with his Transformer toys than let Aunty go over letter names, letter sounds, colors, and shapes with him!

The First Week

It's been a great first week and it's only halfway through!  We had an awesome first day thanks to 3 amazing UH students that I have had the pleasure to work with.  Miss Hope and Miss Gonzalez worked with me last school year and jumped at the opportunity to see what the first day of kindergarten looks like.  Miss Yerick will be with me all school year, so she was excited to meet some of the students that she will be working with.  The day started smoothly thanks to the help of the parents who stayed to unpack supplies, hugged their students, and went on their way so that we could continue our adventure.  I spent the day introducing the students to the wonderful world of kindergarten and teaching them the rules, procedures, and routines that will soon become second nature.  I have to remind myself that they are still little because I am so excited about what we are going to learn!

This week we began our formal language arts and math programs, Storytown and Investigations.  We will begin working on our handwriting and fine motor skills with the Bridges to Handwriting program.  The children will soon be signing songs and repeating rhymes that help them to learn sounds, print letters neatly, and remember math concepts.  We will also begin our science unit on the five senses soon so that we can make scientific observations about the weather and the seasons this quarter.

Thank you for helping to get the year off to a great start!

When I reflected on my practices at the end of the 2009-2010 school year, I decided to use my interest in technology to create a new way for reaching out to families and sharing what we are doing in the classroom  So, I purchased the rights to msokita.com.  I hope parents and families will use this site to stay informed about what is happening in the classroom and to let me know what they want to see more of.  I will be updating the homepage frequently to let you know about upcoming events and share photos with you.  I'll also be blogging about things we're doing in class.

I'm excited to meet the newest group of students and plan our journey through kindergarten!  Don't forget to follow me on Twitter!  www.twitter.com/msokita
